Event Details : 'Krishna Chronicles' A painting exhibition based on Jaidev’s Gita-Govindom in Contemporary Warli Folk Art (This is the first time that Jaydev’s immortal verses have been depicted in Contemporary Warli Folk Art form) by Babita Biswas.
This exhibition is based on one of the oldest and most popular art form known as Warli Folk Art that originates from Maharashtra on the west coast of India. This folk art is characterized by the use of three symbols to compose all forms: dots, lines and triangles. The painting of Warli tribes (originally) does not depict mythological characters or images of deities but depict social life. Images of human beings, animals along with scenes from daily life are created in a loose rhythmic pattern. This is the first time that Jaydev’s immortal verses have been depicted in Contemporary Warli Folk Art form.
In the series of 45 canvases the artist has adapted the conventional two-colour schemes to a multi-coloured palette. For the first time, the artist has experimented with the theme Geet Govindom and has converted it into Warli Folk Art form. She has also further converted warli folk art into classical by expressing complex theme from mythology. Her collection visually deciphers the divine love of Jaydev, a devout of Load Krishna and royal poet in the court of king Lakhshmansen of Bengal in 12th century. He composed a collection of couplets, Geet Govindom, about Lord Krishna and his beloved Radha. Each canvas from her collection draws inspiration from a different stanza or couplet of this poem.
Ms Biswas says that “Through this painting exhibition, I wish to fulfill three purposes: First—to present my work for critical viewing; Second—to give artistic expression to immortal verses of Jaydev and convert Geet Govindom in Folk Art, and finally—to bring a very vibrant art form of India before a worldwide viewership of art lovers. In the time of modern art introducing folk art is a great challenge.”
The artist, since childhood was inspired by her mother who also did painting. Her first exhibition was displayed at AIFACS in 2006.
Her art work on Geet Govindom has been appreciated by Queen Elizabeth II, Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan, Dr Karan Singh, Prof Shiv Prakash, Late Shri Rajesh Khanna, Dr Neeru Mishra, Emenint Hindi Writers Himanshu Joshi, Batuk Chaturvedi etc.

In the year 2010 ICCR, India and the Ministry of Cultural of Republic of Armenia, hosted her solo show at National Gallery of Armenia, and also ICCR, India along with Georgian National Musuem hosted her another solo show at Sh. Amiranashvili Museum of Fine Arts, Tblisi. she is the 1st Indian whose show has been put up at Armenia and Georgia.
