Event Details : United Art Fair (UAF) 2012, India’s biggest art fair.
The fair would be absolutely free for contemporary Indian artists. Over 500 of them will be handpicked from all across the country and the fair will showcase around 2000 works of art cutting across various visual art genres including painting, sculpture, print making, photography, video, digital art and others. It will be an international platform for budding Indian artists to display
their talent before the world and expected to attract art dealers, exhibitors, impresarios
etc. from all over the world.
UAF is the brainchild of Annurag Sharma, director, United Art Logistics Pvt Ltd. Armed with a decade-long experience in shipping high-end artwork to all over the world, Annurag conceived the fair in 2010. “It took two years of preparation to launch the project and this is a unique model. The second edition of the fair is going to focus South East Asia and Europe besides showcasing promising artists of India,” he informed.
Johny ML, project director of the fair says that it has been a great experience in selecting the artists. “We travelled all over India and found that the young artists needed patronage. UAF is all about collapsing the monopolies developed in the art scene during the boom years. We are taking artists to the patrons directly. The fair is an interface of creativity and commerce,” he adds.
Gven that it is free, what can be expected from the fair? Jhony says that he isn’t going to compromise on quality. “I am not looking for that kind of works of art that as a curator would launch me to a different league so that people could say, ‘Look they have produced an international show,’” he said recently. The show is all about bringing to light contemporary Indian art that can stand at par with any international show. The cultural variety of the country is going to be highlighted and the UAF is going to be the platform for that, insists Jhony.
Besides the work of emerging artists, a special show titled Mind the Gap Now is also being readied for the fair. Participating in this section are KS Radhakrishnan, Waswo X Waswo, Manisha Doshi, Indrapramit Roy, Subodh Kerkar, Amitava Das, Shibu Natesan, Vidya Kamat, Manjunath Kamath, NN Rimzon, Sanjeev Khandekar, Brinda Millaer and the likes.
Other plans include setting up a Master’s Hall that will feature nearly 50 works from the modern Indian masters. Works from celebrated Indian artists like the late MF Hussain and Tyeb Mehta will feature in the Tribute Hall. At least 15 works including the life-like baby heads from Chintan Upadhyay will be put up at the Sculpture Park. The video lounge will comprise the latest works by Ranbir Kaleka, Sharmila Samant, Ravi Agarwal, Ebenezer Sunder Singh and others.
Anurag informed that 28 September has been marked as the Dissenter’s Day. “On that day, anybody having a different idea and even a critic of the fair can come and speak to the public from our seminar platform,” he explained.
So what’s the USP of the fair that must compete with several other fairs and exhibitions that are held regularly in major cities of the country? Annurag says that since the fair is artist-driven, it won’t involve any gallery in its proceedings. “Though we aren’t averse to galleries, we want to highlight the artists. During the boom years we were mindlessly buying and selling. Our aim was to profit. But now to promote art, profit cannot be the only driving force. We need to attract more and more art collectors to the scene,” said Annurag.
