It was in the year 1967 when the Hippie movement was at its peak, many youngsters were attracted towards it for its openness and its rebellion approach. But hardly any youngster looked into its philosophy. They ignored their history. They remained ignorant about the Hippie movement. Just ‘flower power’ and rock were there to inspire them. They did not even bother to understand the reactions which the Hippie movement carried.
Ron Jones, a history teacher felt the crisis and tried to make his students understand how bad it could be when one decides to remain ignorant. He tries to attract them towards historical events, but his students seemed to be least interested. He then decides to conduct an experiment which later became the famous the Wave movement.
Jones’ idea was to expose his students to the fact that how ignorance can plunge human society into evil. His experiment proved its effectiveness and gradually overwhelms the entire city. He then realized that he had turned into a fascist leader. He calls his students to break this movement and come out of the spell. He made them understand that it was their ignorance which inspired him to conduct that experiment and lead them to that evil stage.
This experiment later inspired a German playwright and a theatre therapist Reinhold Tritt. He adapted Ron Jones’ entire experiment into a play in German language titled as “Die Welle”, meaning The Wave. This play is a Hindi translation by Rakesh Kaushik of Reinhold Tritt’s “Die Welle”.
