Event Details : "Desire - Still Fires and Suspended Motions" a solo exhibition of paintings by Shakti Tewari.

Shakti Tewari (b.1942) has been showing her work to the public since the 1960s. Her early paintings reflected the inluence of Abstraction, Expressionism and Impressionism.
With her first European exhibition in Belgrade, Yugoslavia where all her paintings were sold within an evening, she exhibited her works in Paris, France(1968) at the same gallery whose owner had promoted the works of Pablo Picasso.
According to Shakti, the galley owner, AP, promised her fame if she stayed on.
However, bound by her cultural background, her reality as a wife and mother of two young children, Shakti followed her husband to their next posting.
She exhibited her paintings in New Delhi, Bangalore, Bombay, India in the 1970s.
She says that she has not regretted her decision.
In the  1980s she had exhibitions in Nairobi, Kenya.
The plains of Kenya, the colors of the earth, the sight of Mount Kenya and the splendor of life in East Africa inluenced the palette of her canvas.
From 1981 to 1985, she and her husband were transferred to the Middle East where she even had an exhibition in Baghdad, Iraq prior to the Iraq-Iran conflict reaching the city.
She joined a community of Iraqi artists but soon the men were called to the front. She recalls the words of one of her friends who said to her, 'How can I hold a gun in my hand? I am an artist. I only know how to hold a paintbrush.'
All cultural and artistic activity came to a standstill, naturally.
In the 1980s she had the pleasure of returning to live in her country of birth where she enjoyed the ongoing support of her husband as patron and had several exhibitions in well known New Delhi art galleries.
In  1988 with yet another transfer, Shakti found herself in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman. She describes the stark beauty of the land as a lunar landscape'.
The villages and towns of the interior, the ancient Portuguese forts on coastline of the Arabian sea were relected in oil on her canvas.
In June 1999, a collection of her works was exhibited at Admit One Gallery in New York City.
Her paintings are characterized by bold color; her strokes create texture and depth and sometimes a three dimensional effect.
Shakti's style has certainly undergone a change in the last ten years since she has made her home in Delhi the city where she was born.
She continues to focus on portraits and landscapes and exhibits in metro area galleries.
