Art is a visual treat for the onlooker but for an artist it is an expression of his/her inner self.
There is no escape from the inseparable facets of art and the emotional state of an artist, which compliment each other to establish a ‘style’ and is in modern terminology coined as ‘brand’. The career of one such artist that spans over four decades is an outstanding interpretation of creative evolution. Amongst the early batches of Delhi College of Art (1967), B.P. Paliwal has been one of the most prolific artists of his times. His range varies from flawless sketches in pen and ink to vibrant water colours that have been bold forays that blended individual aptitude and creative urges with techniques.
Paliwal, who was born in 1944, belonged an era when Indian art was in its transitory phase where deep rooted idealism was in tug-of-war with commercialism that was making inroads into the art world. He shunned the latter for a more satisfying artistic pursuit. The focus was so intent that importance to individual can best be explained by only 3 solo exhibitions mounted by Paliwal. His idea of sharing and being one amongst his fellow-artists resulted in 72 group shows in India and abroad. His paintings are the prized possession of and adorn the walls of prestigious institutions namely Lalit Kala Akademi, Sahitya Kala Parishad, Taj Hotel, Mumbai, AIFACS, Ministry of External Affairs and many others as well as individuals like Dr Karan Singh and Shri K.K. Shah.
His innate sense of artistry was visible right from the initial days when landscapes and nature dominated his fancy. With maturity came the search within for many questions that posed a mystery and tantra art came to be his predominant forte. With the passage of time Paliwal experienced the many ups and downs of life and its unfathomable relationship with man and nature. Its vastness transcended the three worlds-the heavens, earth and water. Explaining the rule of law- the struggle where the mighty devoured the weak-was similar in all the cosmic planes caught the fancy of Paliwal’s muse on canvas. It was a defining moment in his life as water, which held close to its bossom the many secrets and their answers, was the background element on which he interpreted the harsh fact of life-only the strong survive.
After leading an illustrious life as an artist as life member of AIFACS, several honours and
awards including the Sahitya Kala Parishad, Paliwal’s career was cut short by a debilitating paralytic attack.
In his 45th years, this versatile artist is being celebrated and honoured by his colleagues,
contemporaries and his enthusiastic son, Shri Vineet Paliwal, who took the initiative to organize the solo show of his father titled ‘Milestones in Excellence’ at Shridharani Art Gallery, Triveni, Tansen Marg from 31 July to 9th August, 2012, where several renowned artists from different disciplines of art would gather to pay tribute to one of the most respected contemporary artist, who dared to break away from the conventional mould to carve a niche for his trademark style of painting-A Life Explained in Water World.
