Event Details : 'Dreams and Planning : The Case of Cities in Twentieth Century India' Discussion.
A project that will conduct a discussion-tour of ideas and cities to develop and produce a notional and reference map of the various issues concerning how cities in India have been planned and imagined in the last century. This mapping is important to understand the state of cities in contemporary India and the various planning and design strategies it is approached with by planners, social science researchers, as well as designers. This historical investigation approaches an understanding of the present and future of cities in India from the perspective of cultural studies, planning and design.
The project is curated by architect and urban researcher Kaiwan Mehta. Mehta is the author of 'Alice in Bhuleshwar: Navigating a Mumbai Neighbourhood', and is an educator and researcher in the fields of architecture theory, visual studies and city studies.

Prof. Edgar F. N. Ribeiro, architect and urban & regional planner, will deliver the inaugural presentation. Prof. Ribeiro has more than 35 years of experience in urban and regional development and management. He helped the Government of Goa to establish its urban and regional planning department between 1964-67. He was the first Planning Commissioner of the Delhi Development Authority and between 1983-88, the Chief Planner, Town and Country Planning Organisation. In the period of 1989-92, Prof. Ribeiro was Director of the School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi (SPA). 
Between 1992-94 he was Executive Director of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage
(INTACH).

Prof A. G. Krishna Menon will be the discussant for this session. He is an architect, urban planner and conservation consultant who has been practicing and teaching in Delhi since 1972, and in 1990 he co-founded the TVB School of Habitat Studies and was its Director from 1994-2007. While maintaining an active professional practice he remains a passionate interlocutor in mediating the development of Delhi as a Heritage City.
