Event Details : “Franco-Russian Friendship and the Bridge Alexander III in Paris” lecture-cum-presentation by the curator of the Orsay Museum in Paris Mrs. Alice Thomine-Berrada.
This lecture will deal with the history of the Bridge devoted to the Tsar Alexander the 3rd in Paris. Launched in 1896 during the visit in Paris of his son, the Tsar Nicolas II, the construction of the bridge was finished in 1900, for the International Exhibition in which it played an urban and aesthetic role. Stepping over the Seine in one breath, the bridge displayed in the heart of Paris its important ornamentation, heavy of symbols. Erected to celebrate the Franco-Russian friendship, the bridge is representative of the artistic attempts of the time, trying to reconcile technical challenge and aesthetical achievement. The talk will take into account the political context of this construction and will deal with its technical as well as its artistic success.
Alice Thomine-Berrada is curator in the Orsay Museum in Paris, responsible for the collection of architectural drawings. She is also teaching at the Ecole du Louvre in Paris. She has written a PhD dissertation related to a well known French architect, published in 2004 (Joseph Auguste Emile Vaudremer, la rigueur de l’architecture publique, Paris, Picard) as well as many articles devoted to the architectural and urban History of the XIXth Century Paris.
