Event Details : Sanskrit Natya Parishad Of Sri Lal Bahadur Shastri Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeeth presents 'Mrichhakatikam' A Sanskrit Dance-Drama.
Shudraka‟s mrichchakatikam , is an outstanding play on any count. It not only portrays on a wide canvas the lives and customs or a highly Organized Society about Two thousand years ago in Minute detail, but also excels in characterization bordering on the real and comparable to any of the outstanding Dramas of either the East or the west.
The play was translated into English, notably by Horace Hayaman Wilson as The toy cart in 1826 & Arthur W. Ryder in 1905 as The little clay cart. Enacted at the Hearst Greek Theatre in Berkeley in 1907, The Neighborhood playhouse New York (5 december 1924, The toy cart-“a hindu drama attributed to King Shudraka”, directed by Agnes Morgan and Lrene Lewisohn.) Which was then an Off-Broadway Theatre, at the Theater de lys in 1953, And the Potboiler Art Theater in Los Angeles in 1926, When it featured actors such as James A.Marcus, Symona Boniface and Gordon. In 2008 Translated by J.A.B. Van Buitenen and Directed by Bill Rauch the play was enacted at Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Ashland, Oregon. In july 2011 the play was Directed by Lavina Jadhwani at The Consulate General of India, Chicago.In French language the play was Published tittle called Le chariot de terre cuite 1876 by E Leroux in Paris .
The first Silent film of Kannada Film Industry Mrichhakatika (Vasantsena) 1931, Starring Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay and Utsav a 1984, Hindi Bollywood Film by Girish Karnad, was based on an adaptation of this Play.
Shudraka‟s Mrichhakatikam has been seen The Delhi Stage quite a few times in Mohan Rakesh‟s Hindi Translation Presented by different Directors. And Habib Tanvir‟s Presentation titled „Mitti Ki Gadi‟ in a mix of Hindustani and Chattisgarhi Languages was the best seen so far.
