(1) Egyptian Mawlawyiah Group/Whirling Dervish Dancers/ Egypt
The Egyptian Mawlawiyah was established in 1994 by its singer Amer Eltony. He wanted to present the Egyptian heritage internationally to highlight its customs, and its cultural identity. The Mawlawiyah uses all festive forms. They have used ‘whirling’ from Egypt including the ancient Pharao’s celebrations which practiced whirling as a basic ritual during the annual celebration of the resurrection of Osiris. In this ritual, the conflict between good and evil ends. The circular form of the Mawlawi dance is inseparable from the musical rhythm that presents the audible and the visual form. Whirling for long hours around the center of the circle unites the singers in high spiritual sentiment that elevates their souls to spiritual lucidity and rids them from earthly emotions and the material world.
Lead Singer: Amer El Tony
(2) Warsi Brothers / Qawwals from Hyderabad.
(Nazeer Ahmed Khan Warsi & Naseer Ahmed Khan Warsi)
This is an Indian Qawwali group, consisting of brothers Nazeer Ahmed Khan Warsi and Naseer Ahmed Khan Warsi, along with eight accompanists The Warsi brothers, belong to the Qawwal ‘Bachchon ka Gharana’, and are known for the purity of the ragas they render. Both the brothers perform regularly on All India Radio.
The Warsi brothers Qawwali is a form of devotional song special to India and Pakistan, rooted in Sufi musical tradition which dates back to the 13th century. Quawwali is generally credited to the genius of Amir Khusrau. The lyrics are in Persian, Urdu or Hindustani, the themes are about mystical love, in praise of Allah the Prophet, or the Sufi saints. Qawwali is sung in a group comprising a leader and a chorus. The lyric is elaborated by the lead singer while the chorus takes up the refrain, the salient words and phrases. Qawwali has a compulsive, rocking rhythm maintained by the handclaps of the chorus.
