(1) Danse Dialogues
-Dance Performance -Navtej Johar – Show: "Mango Cherry Mix" (Indo Japanese)
Mango Cherry Mix is a duet between two Asian men who seek to explore their cultural-selves -their differences and similarities- in the presence of a "familiar" other. Eliciting a sympathetic examination of the self by the other, the work seeks to gradually eliminate or diminish the power of an objectifying eye of the other. Traditionally both cultures are rigidly structured around the philosophical and spiritual possibility of an ambiguous "emptiness," a shunya or a Zen experience at the center; yet both employ different, if not diametrically opposed methods to evoke and protect this experience.
Mango Cherry Mix tries to locate these cultural experiences within the modern context. Both dancers have lived in the East as well as the West. Both appreciate traditional and contemporary forms of dance. Both still gravitate towards their respective "essential" cultural experiences, yet seek an autonomous balance as perpetual outsiders both home and abroad.
Navtej Johar is a Bharatanatyam exponent and a choreographer whose work is unique in that it freely traverses between the traditional and the contemporary. Trained in Bharatanatyam at Kalakshetra, Chennai and with Leela Samson at the Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, New Delhi, he also did Performance Studies at New York University. Widely travelled, he has performed at prestigious venues all over the world and worked with prominent dance companies and choreographers including Bill T. Jones, Chandralekha, Leela Samson, Peter Sparling, Janet Lilly and Yoshiko Chuma to name a few. A long time practitioner and teacher of yoga, Johar is the founder of Studio Abhyas, a non-profit organization dedicated to dance, yoga and humane urban design.
About Hiroshi Miyamoto : Born in Japan, Hiroshi Miyamoto has performed nationally and internationally in the numerous choreographies in diverse styles including in his own choreographies. After completing his
bachelor of law degree from Hosei University in Tokyo, he moved to North America to study dance. He studied at Main Dance,Vancouver (1995/1996) and Merce Cunnigham Studio, NY (1998/2000). He is a co-founder and collective member of Green Tea – a collective of Japanese contemporary dancers in Toronto. He is also a company member and rehearsal director of in DANCE / Hari Krishnan since 2003.
(2) “Pravaha”/Contemporary Choreographic Work
Group Name: Sadhya- a unit of performing Arts
Choreographed by: Santosh Nair, Light Designing: Gautam Bhattacharya
Pravaha is a contemporary choreographic work, which explores the vocabulary of movements in different contexts. It is a process of discovering your reach as a performer, pushing the boundaries, if any. It is also an attempt to connect to your innermost energy -centre letting the same flow through you and at times transferring it to other individuals.
