Event Details : Sri Geetagovinda Pratishthan, Puducherry presents 'Ashtapadi' a Festival of  Dance, The complete Experience of Jayadeva’s Geetagovinda, Offering a Fresh Interpretation & New Choreography in Odissi.

Geetagovinda Pratisthana, Puducherry is presenting the second edition of Ashtapadi©, a Festival of Dance featuring new choreographic compositions of songs from Jayadeva’sGeetagovinda in Odissi on 3rd and 4th October 2011 at Kamani Auditorium at Delhi. The first part of Ashtapadi Festival, an important component of Delhi Celebrates, organized during theCommonwealth Games, 2010 was a huge success, attracting full house and enthusiastic audience response and critical acclaim. “Odissi hasn’t looked so good!”, commented a leading daily. “Not withstanding countless Odissi versions, Geetagovinda Pratisthana’s two-day Ashtapadi Festival…managed to enthrall large audiences with fresh interpretations. … the crowning concluding effort was Sharmila Biswas’s simple uncluttered choreography of the ‘Jaya Jagadeesha Hare’ Dashavatara.”, wrote senior dance critic Leela Venkataraman in the Friday Hindu review. “An amazing performance, beautifully presented -n- aesthetically staged”, “Well conceived.”, “Stunning.”, “Wonderful show.”, “Superb & spellbinding performance in its supreme form!” - were some of the comments of the discerning audience.
The two-day festival will feature dance performances of approximately ninety minutes each evening and includes solo, duet and group performances with the participation of thirty-six dancers and musicians. This unique festival will present fourteen items covering eleven songs and three sloka sequences ofGeetagovinda to give a complete experience of the twelfth-century Sanskrit classic of Jayadeva. This major choreographic project by Padmashree Guru Gangadhar Pradhan, Aruna Mohanty and Sharmila Biswas will see debut performance of ten items. The performances are presented in the format of a dance-drama without being overtly structured like one. The songs andslokas are creatively linked through music and movement to maintain continuity of the narrative thread of Jayadeva’s epic composition. The dances are based on the original music composition of Dr Subas Pani for Sampoorna Geetagovinda, a set of five audio CDs released by SAREGAMA. Dr Subas Pani, author, translator and scholar with research interests in Jagannatha, Jayadeva and Geetagovinda, is the creative director of the festival and has provided research inputs, interpretation of the text and key choreographic concepts.
Senior dancers Aruna Mohanty, Sharmila Biswas alongwith Jahnabi, Shaswati, Ayona, Priyanki, Madhusmita, Pabitra, Yudhistir, Ramesh and members of the repertories of Orissa Dance Academy, Bhubaneswar and Odissi Vision and Movement Centre, Kolkata will perform in the festival. Noted Odissi singers Sukanta Kundu, Harapriya Swain and Rupak Parida and Nazia Alam, lead vocalist of Sampoorna Geetagovinda, will be the accompanying singers. Senior Guru Sri Dhaneswar Swain on the mardala will lead the musicians.
