Event Details : '154 Neshvilla Road and Other Stories' an exhibition of photographs by Kapil Das.
Photoink is pleased to announce Kapil Das’s first solo exhibition, 154 Neshvilla Road and Other Stories—an ensemble of photographs that course through his public and private world.
As a raconteur, Kapil Das employs the photographic image to reveal the disquiet lingering in his personal life. He photographs the debris of a life he left behind in Dehra Dun—a brother whose illness altered the fabric of family life, a mother and father whose lives are consumed in being caretakers. Kapil’s unflinching gaze is neither shy nor interested in exploring any sentimentality. Instead, he offers a view of his life, skinned to its bones and laced with both humour and poignancy. It is through his scrutiny of the inanimate objects spread around the house that we gather any understanding of its inhabitants. The main protagonists enter the frame sparingly and perhaps it is their distance from each other and the viewer, which draws attention to the tenuous peace that exists.
Despite the fragility in his private life, Kapil Das has used humour to douse many fires. He gravitates towards the peculiar and frames many of his subjects to heighten those attributes. Photographs of deformed babies in formaldehyde filled jars, wax statues of freedom fighters, small town theatre actors, a museum filled with stuffed animals etc all reinforce Kapil’s idiosyncratic gaze.
BIOGRAPHY Born in Dehra Dun in 1980, Kapil Das majored in English from Delhi University. He co-founded a design consultancy practice, Quicksand in 2005, which is based in Gurgaon and Bangalore. In 2009, Kapil co-founded a public arts initiative, Blindboys, which is an online/offline forum to present new photography and executes collaborative street exhibitions. One of the key interventions is the open street exhibition called BlowUp – an effort to encourage photographers to present their work in public spaces using affordable materials and a way for the general public to experience the photographic image. BlowUp has been installed in Bangalore, New Delhi, Mumbai, Paris, Newcastle and Siem Reap. Amidst all this work and travel, Kapil has been photographing both his private and public worlds, which collide seamlessly in his first solo exhibition, 154 Neshvilla Road and Other Stories. He lives in Bangalore.
