Event Details : Nemi Nidhi and Natarang Pratishthan, the theatre resource centre and archives are organizing the Nemichandra Jain Memorial Lecture 2011, in memory of Shri Nemichandra Jain, the eminent theatre critic and poet as well as founder editor of Hindi theatre quarterly Natarang and founder director Natarang Pratishthan.The lecture will be delivered by the eminent social scientist Prof. Dipankar Gupta on ‘Metaphors of Culture’.
Educated at the Delhi School of Economics and the Jawaharlal Nehru University, he taught sociology and social anthropology in JNU for about thirty years. His work has illuminated various facets of the relationship between tradition and modernity. He has made significant contributions to our understanding of social stratification and diversity in India, especially the complexity and dynamics of the caste system. He has authored sixteen books, the most recent of which are Learning to Forget : The Anti-Memoirs of Modernity (2006), The Caged Phoenix : Will India Fly? (2009) and, Justice Before Reconciliation: Negotiating a ‘New Normal’ in Post-Riot Mumbai and A visiting professor at many international universities, editor and columnist, he has received several awards and honours, including the award of Chevalier De L’Ordre Des Arts Et Des Lettres (knight of the order of Arts and Litters) by the French Government, the Malcolm Adiseshiah Award for Development Studies, and the Eric Wolfe-Krishna Bharadwaj prize for his studies on the Indian peasantry.
The Nemichandra Jain Memorial Lectures have been delivered in previous years by – Dr. Mukund Lath, Dr. Krishna Kumar, Shri Kumar Sahani, Shri Prabhash Joshi, and Prof. Govind Deshpande, and a dialogue between playwright Shri Mahesh Elcunchwar and actress Ms Maya Rao.
