Event Details : Punjabi Academy (Department of Art, Culture & Language, Govt. of Delhi) presents 'Bebe Ji Main Sant Ban Gaya' a Satirical and Comedy Play based on exploitation by religious fake babas.
The present play is an attempt to bring to light the follies and secrets of the so called religious Sants and Gurus in contemporary times. The play ironically portrays the life of a modern 'guru' who leads a luxurious and ostentatious life by exploiting the aspirations and desires of common people, breaking their ties from real world everyday realities. Simultaneously, the play also comments on the self-generated problems of common and working people who resort to superstitions to escape their real and practical problems. The writer has very boldly tried to present manifold problems, like 'Derawaad', superstitions, female feticide, unemployment and degradation of moral and ethical issues in the young generation. All these issues faced by Punjabi society has been deftly weaved together with broader systemic problems like corrupted bureaucracy, stale political system and age-old traditional and cultural ethos which frustrate society's betterment and progress. The play is a two-hour long satirical comedy. By intermixing the element of comedy and satire, and without losing the seriousness of the issues, the play foregrounds the significance and beauty of leading an honest and hard-working life while believing in the word of Guru Granth Sahib only against the emergence of these new-age Gurus and religious dogmatism. The technical aspects of dramatic representation like, sets, dressing, music and make-up has been taken care of at a very subtle level. There are thirty-six characters in the drama which has been played by the eight known personalities from world of films.
