Event Details : 'Viserjan (Atto Rakto Keno)' A Dance Theatre Production by Anveshana Dance Theatre. Tribute to Guru Rabindra Nath Tagore.
Sacrifice is a play by Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore that explores the meaning of true religious devotion and exposes the heinous, barbaric and brutal acts perpetrated by the fundamental religious orthodoxy, in the name of religion and God.
Director’s Note: Tagores plays may be conveniently studied under three heads: dramas of plot and character written in the traditional style (according to some a Shakespearean manner); symbolist dramas where the action exists primarily to project a meaning not directly communicable; and dance dramas. In the first category, of which Visarjan or Sacrifice is the most successful, there is no paucity of action. Some personages are vividly portrayed. The emphasis however is neither on plot nor on character but on the ideas emerging from them. He has written a wonderful and revolting conception, against the cruelty of society before the world war.
The juxtaposition of opposites in this work restrains a literary critic from believing any particular interpretation with too great a degree of finality. These conflicts are expressed in the wider realm of socio-legal-political systems. The infinite potential for verbal and nonverbal dance theatre in this literary text inspires me to explore new dimensions of Tagore’s work and experiment with this rich theme, I experimented with form, treatment and structure, creating a new expression, identity and metaphor in the modern context.
ANVESHANA DANCE THEATRE
ANVESHANA creates images and emotions in movement arising from the creation of work that comes from introspection. Its purpose is not to approach dance as an illustrative event but rather to arrive at an intimacy with this everyday art and to discover hidden worlds that can spring up inside the same dance.
SANGEETA SHARMA, DANCER / CHOREOGRAPHER
Founder Director of ANVESHANA DANCE THEATRE, Sangeeta Sharma, is an Indian contemporary dancer and choreographer for over 23 years with the Indian & western essence. Sangeeta’s choreographed pieces demonstrate her unique creative and innovative style to bring up issues facing the society, journey into the internal struggle and conflicts of each individual, her own spiritual search with the audience and the interconnectedness between theatre and dance.
