Event Details : Mahesh Bhatt's "The Last Salute" Play based on Muntadhar al-Zaidi's Book "The Last Salute to President Bush".
The play is based on the historical incident which took place on 14th December 2008,in Iraq. When Muntadher al-Zaidi hurled his shoes at the then US President George W. Bush during his farewell visit to Baghdad.
What made an ordinary man raise voice against the most powerful man in the world? What were the repercussions of the incident all over the world?
This incident takes center stage when we see it in the light of what America is doing to the whole world in the name of democracy, human rights! It is plain shameful, pathetic, disgraceful, disheartening and pitiable.
Muntadhar hails from a normal background, his father lost his eyesight when he was a young boy. He fought his way through ups and downs of life. His pen which symbolized the power of media was not reaching the world. So he opted to rise up against the odds. Muntadher who was a self accomplished man, raised his voice against the tyrannical regime of Bush, putting his comfort security, career and even life at stake. Hurling of shoe by Muntadher is very similar to what Bhagat Singh did in Parliament Assembly both were trying to expose the tyrannical attitude of the regimes. He challenged a superpower in the Gandhian way without using weapons or a suicidal step. The incident symbolizes the agony of the common man who is devastated and wants to stand up to save the dignity of Iraq, its self respect, for those who were slained, children who were made orphans, women who were forced to lead the life of a window. When we analyse what happened in Iraq we are faced by a situation in which we have to decide whether to speak against or keep quit. The play raises questions and instigates the mass speak up and be there for the cause. It fires up the conscience. The changes in the world have been spearheaded by the youth, thus Muntadhar emerges as an ideal hero for the coming generation to stand against oppression, subjugation, injustice and tyranny.
