Time : 7:00 pm

Event Details : Vadehra Art Gallery and Prestel announce the release of their latest publication 'Queer' by Sunil Gupta.
It follows from the Shilpa Gupta monograph published by the same in 2010. This is an international monograph on a very important Indian photographer and features selections from each of his major series from 1970s onwards, offering a comprehensive overview of his works to date.
To celebrate the sense of humour that has propelled queer lives through the last century and a half, Pramada Menon and Gautam Bhan will render a comic version of the conversation between Saleem Kidwai and Sunil Gupta that underpins the work in the book.
Saleem Kidwai will also be present at the event.
Gupta is also a well-known artist, curator and writer. For decades he has explored narratives of contemporary gay life in India and other parts of the world; tackled issues of gender and sexuality; and documented his own experiences living with AIDS.
The hardcover 140-page publication with 80 colour illustrations has an illuminating essay by Canadian curator Keith Wallace and a conversation between historian Saleem Kidwai and Sunil Gupta. Above all it chronicles Gupta’s divergent photographic series that range from narrative portraits to fictional photo essays. Beautifully reproduced, these photos include his renowned series “The Pre–Raphaelites”; heart-rending images of children living in an HIV-positive care center; 1970s street scenes from New York City’s West Village; and his groundbreaking portraits of gay men, women and transgender individuals living in his native country and struggling against homophobic laws and culture. Subversive, whimsical, personal and political, Sunil Gupta’s photographs have done much to raise awareness about—and overcome the taboos of—homosexual life throughout the modern world.
About the artist: SUNIL GUPTA was born in Delhi, India and has spent time living in Canada, London, and New York. Since its inception, Prestel has emphasised quality. This adherence to high standards of editing and production has won the company broad recognition and numerous awards in the publishing world.
VADEHRA ART GALLERY (VAG) has promoted contemporary Indian art through exhibitions, retrospectives, publications and educational programmes since 1986. Over the last 20 years, the Gallery has become the locus through which both modern and contemporary artists have reached the public. VAG’s position as an artistic interlocutor with the public is especially vital in contemporary India because of the lack of vibrant art museum culture. In 1996, VAG became the first Indian gallery to systematically publish books on art. We have published 14 books so far that range from monographs on artists, to books on art making technique, to picture books and finally a comprehensive art directory. Done in close collaboration with the artists, these publications are vital historical documents.
