About Nrtiya Seva : This is a specially choreographed multi-media presentation designed to celebrate the
Millennium of the Brahadisvara Temple (also referred to as the 'Big Temple') situated at Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu.
This Temple constructed by the great Chola Emperor Raja Raja I, has many distinct features and artistic excellences relating to: the architectural design, perfect balance of the parts and the whole, sculpture, painting, stone and bronze images, the idols within and the reliefs outside. A wealth of inscriptions enables
reconstruction of the long history of temple administration and provides a vast corpus of economic, social, cultural and organizational information over a span of many centuries.
The enlightened Emperor had envisaged a key role for the Temple not only in promoting 'bhakti' but also in his scheme of patronage for arts.
Accordingly he made the necessary arrangements and set up endowments. This has been serving as a continuous source of inspiration for artists over many centuries covering also the periods of rule by later
dynasties like the Nayak and the Maratha.
