CURATORIAL NOTE: Chhaya Bhanti & Kanu Agrawal
The show celebrates the ingenuity of our creative culture industries that have become obscured by commercial representations of traditional skills as bric-a-brac. Displacing craft and performing arts from their accustomed niches in fairs and expositions, seven experiential installations attempt to blur conventional distinctions that separate artists from artisans, art from craft.
‘Artisans’ have sustained profound conversations with materials, colour, form and movement over centuries, enshrining an index that has been inexhaustibly borrowed by artists and designers for individual expression. In the shift from the primeval to the privatized, there is a collision of knowledge, skills and occupations that has thrown into question the roles of artisans, performers, designers, artists and consumers in shaping a society that is in negotiation with its cultural narrative. Can something that thrives in the collective expression of the handmade, survive in the new mode of individual authorship?
Craft practice evolves over generations of applied skills, imagination and creativity through cultural artifacts that represent a continuum of becoming. This ontology is central to the notion of understanding culture industries as versatile, not as a homogeneous portfolio of static curiosities. As our inherent creative processes encounter the onslaught of global and local market forces, shifting ecological patterns, development mandates, and new social structures, the collectivity, renewability and improvisation inherent in their practice offer powerful directions for a sustainable future. It is essential that we enable a multi-disciplinary exchange between those who shape our cultural ecology. In this show, Jiyo! presents two years of dialogue with artists, artisans, designer, performers and consumers, revealing new ways of looking and valuing that, which is essential to our received notions of identity.
