Event Details : Open Air Film Night 'Friendship'.
Friendship can take many forms…
Friends can bring out the best in us, they offer trust, compassion and understanding – sometimes they know us better than we know ourselves – but that is also why they can hurt us deeply. This film night presents a number of possible friendships, some most unlikely and surprising, others true life-long bonds. The films presented tell of friendships emerging and breaking up, about people who discover themselves anew through the eyes of the other, and show what a friend can do for us – and to us.
In the course of the night you will encounter a fast-track clash of opposites, two seamen in a desperate situation that puts their friendship to the test, a world-wary loner who is saved by a puppy and two strangers changed by a shared journey…

A Friend of Mine (Ein Freund von mir)
Director: Sebastian Schipper, 2006
Karl and Hans are like fire and water – or accelerating and braking… It’s hard to imagine two guys having less in common… but sometimes, an unlikely friendship is all it takes to change the world. Karl is a young mathematician with a promising career at an insurance company, whereas the man-about-town Hans only takes up the odd job to get by. When they meet, Hans asks Karl whether he is happy. Karl doesn’t know what to reply until Hans shows him what makes him happy: girls, airplanes, the fastest backwards driving car in the world, and driving a Porsche at night in the nude along the Autobahn for example. For Hans “friendship” means to share everything, even Stelle, the queen of his heart. This is too much for Karl. But then, you can’t just get rid of a friend like Hans, and a woman like Stelle is unforgettable...
The Raft (Das Floß)
Director: Jan Thüring, 2004
After a bad storm, seafarers Marty and Ernest are drifting on the ocean on a raft. Together they fight to survive, but when they catch a small fish, it becomes evident what true friendship really means.
Underdogs (Schwere Jungs Habens Echt Nicht Leicht)
Director: Jan Hinrik Drevs, 2007
Mosk is a violent and unpredictable offender who, against his will, finds himself enrolled in a program for training guide dogs for the blind. A man of few words and much use of his fists, Mosk would rather be weight-training for the prison championship, but the new prison governor is determined to make a success of her new re-socialization scheme. Under threat of being disqualified from competing, Mosk accepts the job and quickly discovers that the methods he uses on himself and his fellow inmates, as well as those outside prison, do not work on a puppy. Only when the dog falls seriously ill does he discover his feelings for the animal. From then on, an intense friendship develops between him and the puppy newly named Grappa. But the training is the easy part in comparison to what follows. When Mosk has to give up the dog and hand it over to its new owner, the pain of separation proves too much and Mosk commits an act of desperation.
Sheep and Chips (Die Schimmelreiter)
Director: Lars Jessen, 2009
Northern Germany can be so beautiful... some say. Others are dying of boredom there and want nothing more than to get the hell out of there. The good-humored Fuchs, a passionate food control agent with the local authorities, spends his days going from one snack bar to the next, making sure everything is in order. He dreams of life in the big city Hamburg, but to get transferred there, he’s got to prove himself. And along comes the perfect opportunity to do so when Tillmann, his boss’ misanthropic brother, is assigned to accompany him on a business trip. Tillmann, a depressive alcoholic, couldn’t take it abroad and shows up again at home in rural Dithmarschen. However, Fuchs has soon to learn that in travelling with a companion like this he might have bitten off more than he can chew… Die Schimmelreiter is a classic buddy movie, a tour-de-force through the provincial wastelands of Northern Germany.
