Event Details : The Deshbandhu Dramatic Society, Mirrors presents “Hazar Chaurasi Ki Maa”, a play written by Mahashweta Devi. Set in Calcutta of the 1970’s and The Naxal Movement serves as the pretext for the events that transpire during the course of the play. We are introduced to Sujata, a mother and a wife, who belongs to an affluent family. Brati, her youngest son is the light of her life. The play begins with the tragic death of Brati, which plunges Sujata’s life into a sudden darkness. Sujata struggles to cope with the loss of her son Brati as the rest of her family leaves no stone unturned to hush up Brati’s death and to paint him as a social criminal, completely disregarding the egalitarian belief that he stood for.
Sujata embarks on a journey against her family, to discover the true identity of her son, to find out the driving factors that forced an intelligent, dynamic and affluent person like Brati to sacrifice his life. She sets sail on a voyage which reveals to her the contrast between the society that she is a part of and revolutionaries like Brati.
As the play ends the superficial nature of the people around her and their casual dismissal of the real problems surrounding them is revealed in its full horror.
