Details : W+K Exp presents ‘What Happens in Mukteshwar’, an exhibition of works by 16 artists who were inspired by the first artists’ retreat camp held from July 6-13, 2010.
Curated by Johny ML, ‘What Happens in Mukteshwar’, is a result of the 6-day art camp organized by W+K Exp in Mukteshwar and its surrounding areas. ‘What Happens in Mukteshwar’ will open on January 22, 2011 to coincide with the India Art Summit and is listed in the VIP programme of this very prestigious event.
The exhibition will showcase over 30 works – mostly two works by each artist. The exhibits will comprise all genres and mediums – ranging from photography and light boxes to prints, sculptural installations, drawings, assemblages, and works on paper, wood and on canvas. The subjects of the works, inspired from the shared experience at the retreat, encompass inspiration from the journey to Mukteshwar, the place itself or the dialogue and the interaction amongst the group.
The exhibition has been curated by Johny ML who also played a role of Critic-in-Residence at the retreat. Not only did he spend those 6 days at the retreat with the artists and shared the experience with them, he also directed the artists’ interaction by way of organizing talks of their works where each artist presented their work to the rest of the group followed by informal Q&A sessions.
Scheduled to be held at the much sought after and fashionable One Style Mile complex in Mehrauli, next to the Olive Bar & the Kitchen, the exhibition will be specially designed to turn this quaint and mystical location to suit the exhibition. The architect Saurabh Dakshini of Studio Organon, who will design the exhibition, is known to provide a platform for organic confluence where the location is allowed to permeate the design solution and so provide the most appropriate design in order to facilitate the experience of viewing the artworks.
Note on the artists’ retreat: The intent behind the 16-artists retreat was to allow for a creative process that would lead to collaborative dialogue, shared creative process and a shared experience amongst artists of all genres, gender, and age groups which then in turn, would allow them to nurture each other’s practice as they create new works in response to one another while gaining from one another and thinking beyond individual limitations.
The retreat was highly successful in its outcome. Through the group process and planned activities, not only did it succeed in achieving a living network amongst this group of participating artists, it was also successful in articulating some key concepts and practices by provoking an on-going inquiry into the field of contemporary art by its very creators.
The retreat is therefore rendered as an important intervention in the creative process, the outcome of which will be on display at the exhibition.
