Background : Launched in 1995 as a project to help Indian rock find a voice, in the first year it produced the first ever compilation of 14 Indian bands. That started a movement in the Indian rock scene that created a paradigm shift in the scene. Bands got a much needed platform to release and perform their own music and moved away from the cover dominated scene that existed prior to this. The first festival was held in Kolkatta in 1997, and after that the festival was held mostly in the two largest cities of India – Delhi & Mumbai each year.
Predominantly Indian bands play at the festival, but since 2001 it has also steadily been inviting International bands at the festival. Bands like Enslaved, WE and El Caco from Norway, Your Code Name Is: Milo from UK, Freak Kitchen and the Jonas Hellborg Band from Sweden have played at the festival.
In 2010, Great Indian Rock invites Swedish heavyweights Meshuggah alongside NWOBHM (New wave of british heavy metal) pioneers Tesseract and Norways very own Enslaved and Purified In Blood.
