Artist's Comments :
Drawings: For the past few years I have been using drawing to highlight two interlinked ideas. Those of space and light. In a literal sense, space is defined in drawing as two distinct possibilities- space as boundless and infinite, and space as enclosure, created by walls, floors and windows. Light and shadow are used to define space, as are objects and buildings. The drawings are done in graded thicknesses of ink pens, a technique that relies on building up the image by shade and shadow. The dark and light are defined in such a way as to give added dimension to the building, object or space.
Sculpture: The sculpture is similarly an exploration of people in space. In most pieces it is a record of movement, a series of frozen frames as a body moves through space. A static record of a dynamic changing form. The pieces consequently are in constant motion: A leap. A Jump, A Fall, A Somersault, A Flight. As with the drawings, gravity returns everything- people and buildings- back to the earth.
Profile : Gautam Bhatia graduated in Fine Arts and went on to get a Masters degree in Architecture. A Delhi-based architect, he has received several awards for his drawings and buildings and has also written extensively on architecture. Besides a biography on Laurie Baker, he is the author of Punjabi Baroque, Silent Spaces and Malaria Dreams – a trilogy that focuses on the cultural and social aspects of architecture. The Punchtantra, - a rewriting of the original Panchatantra into contemporary folk-tales and Comic Century, An Unreliable History of the 20th Century were published by Penguin India, while Whitewash: An Unkind View of India and its Makers was released in May 2007. Two recent shows of drawings and sculpture entitled Looking Through Walls and The Good Life examined disparities between the professed goals of architecture and the public perception of building. Bhatia is currently working on Below the Horizon – A City Underground, a project of drawing and ideas.
