About the Exhibition : Mahatma Gandhi selected Dandi and Salt as his metaphors to inspire an entire people to independence. In this show, we deal with multiple metaphors: Salt March as envisioned by Gandhi, Gandhi’s Salt as we perceive it today and most importantly our perception of the mahatma and the relevance of his teachings today.
This project is not about endorsing Gandhi within the contemporary art production-dissemination-consumption chain. It is not about seeing Gandhi uncritically. It is about looking at India and its reality from a contemporary aesthetic perspective and in this quest Gandhi may be the best ‘route’ to understanding India.
For Indians, Gandhi ji’s image is an introduction to the visual history of their national pride and struggle for independence from three centuries of British rule. The image of Ghandhiji, whether it is a calendar picture or a television documentary, grows with us.  At each juncture of our cultural and intellectual formation we make certain re-thinking on Gandhiji and his unique principles of life, resistance and non violent means of achieving success.
The changes in our living contexts have made it a bit difficult to imbibe Gandhiji’s principles in the pragmatic forms of his times. However, a deeper analysis of his principles, exemplified by his life and practice themselves tells us that Gandhiji has an all time relevance because his principles, interpreted as per the renewed contexts, are venerable and acceptable and possibly may make this world a better place to live in.
