Event Details : 'Architectural Blue' An Exhibition of Cyanotypes by Robert A. Schaefer, Jr.
A trained architect, Robert Schaefer was very interested in photographic processes invented in the 19th Century and his favorite one became the cyanotype technique - the blueprinting process. Enhancing the light surreal direction of his imagery, the technique became very much a part of his art practice and was used for many subsequent exhibitions Schaefer's work integrates a 'machine age aesthetic' with a quality of neo-impressionism characterized by photography's embrace of painting.
Whilst traveling to India for the first time in 2009, Robert Schaefer's main goal was to photograph the buildings designed by Le Corbusier for Chandigarh, which he had studied as a student of architecture. Schaefer also photographed the Parliament Library in Delhi and took time to engage with examples of ancient Indian architecture such as Jantar Mantar, Humayan's Tomb, Qutab Minar Tower, the Taj Mahal and Fathepur Sikri.
These images bring together Schaefer's two mediums of architecture and photography under the theme of India. He has chosen to print them with the cyanotype process because of the relationship the resultant color of the cyanotype holds for India – its role in mythology, the indigo of textiles and the relationship that India has to 19th Century processes (as visible in the collections of the Alkazi Foundation in Delhi).
The exhibition organized at Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan features these photographs of the architecture of Delhi, alongside pictures taken in Germany, setting up an interesting dialogue within Schaefer's body of work. His photographs of Corbusier's city will be on view at the Government Museum and Art Gallery in Chandigarh from 11th to 17th November, 2010. As part of the two exhibitions organized by Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan, a series of related events takes place.
