About Umang Children's Theatre Organization : Late Smt. Rekha jain, a veteran in the field of children’ theatre had started Umang in the year 1979 and ever since the aim of Umang has been to bring children to the medium of theatre for expression, enjoyment and education. Umang is among the few organizations that provide a common platform through theatre to children who come from varying economic backgrounds, give them a chance to interact and also learn from one another. In 1997, Umang joined hands with Ankur ANAWA to reach out to underprivileged children in NOIDA and include them in the process of developing full fledged plays every year.
In the last 30 years, Umang has presented more than 80 plays, most of which had been written, directed and designed by Mrs. Rekha Jain. The plays, providing full scope to the child’s imagination, cover a vast range of issues that are close to the hearts of the young actors and actresses. In 2004, Umang celebrated its Silver Jubilee with theatre activities throughout the year. The Rajat Utsav culminated with a four day festival of children’s plays with participants from various schools and organizations.
The play Kisse Afanti Ke is the culmination of the annual Summer Theatre Workshop conducted by Bansi Kaul. It is based on humorous folk tales of the character Afanti who fools the rich, arrogant and powerful to help the poor, down-troden and weak. The three main episode in the play – ‘Udney Wala Goda’, Jatil Prashna’, and ‘Afanti aur Pichkoo Pehalwan’ are directed by Harsh Dond, Amit and Pramod Sharma under Bansi Kaul’s guidance. Noted musicologist Smt. Anjana Puri has provided the music for the plays.
Rekha Jain Bal Rang Samman : Bal Rang Samman renamed by Umang as the Rekha Jain Bal Rang Samman in the memory of its mentor and founder director Smt. Rekha Jain instituted for outstanding contribution in children’s theatre in India.
Smt Rekha Jain, one of the pioneers of children’s theatre in India, Sangeet Natak Akademy Awardee and founder of the children’s theatre organization Umang, who passed away recently, established the Bal Rang Samman in 2009 to honour individuals who have made outstanding contribution to children’s theatre in the country. This is the only award of its kind which recognizes and celebrates the importance of children’s theatre in India.
She could not live to confer the award on the two eminent persons, Dr. Harikrishna Devsare and Shri Bansi Kaul, she had selected for the first Bal Rang Samman for their valuable contribution to children’s theatre. Dr. Harikrishna Devsare is eminent writer of children’s literature inclusive of plays and awardee of Sahitya kala Parishad, Hindi Akademy etc and Shri Bansi Kaul, the noted theatre director, designer also in children’s theatre and awardee of Sangeet Natak Akademy, Shikhar Samman etc. Today the award has special significance in view of the fact that children’s theatre is poised to be introduced in the school curriculum and, as such, there is a need for creating and nurturing talents in this area.
