Event Details : Action Aid presents ‘I’ Celebrate ‘Me’ A photo exhibition
A series of striking images of the transgender community of the southern state of India, Tamil Nadu, by a professional photographer, Srikant Kolari, who spent time with the community. Minimal narrative will include a few key facts on status of the transgender community around the world and in India and basic details about the community in Tamil Nadu. The photo exhibition attempts to reinforce their identity of choice and demand for a life of dignity.

BACKGROUND: India is home to the largest number of the transgender in the world. Due to their unique identity this community has been at high risk of being infected with the HIV virus while also being at risk to sexual, physical and emotional abuse. They continue to live on the margins of the society, with very few livelihood options open to them. Due to their unique identity this community has been at high risk of being infected with the HIV virus while also being at risk to sexual, physical and emotional abuse.
The transgender community in Tamil Nadu has through years of advocacy made possible many policy interventions such as identity cards for the community, free sexual reassignment surgery (SRS) by government hospitals and the community continues to seek for its right to live with dignity, with demands around livelihood options among others.
A major victory for the community Following a public hearing highlighting daily injustice and poverty faced by the transgender community in Tamil Nadu, the state governor announced, on January 23 2008, the establishment of a Welfare Board for Transgenders – a world first.
The hearing organised by the Tamil Nadu AIDS Solidarity Action group (TASA), Tamil Nadu State Commission for Women and ActionAid brought together over 300 transgender people from across the state. A citizen’s jury, including the former director general of police, retired judge and university vice chancellor, heard the concerns of those living a ‘blurred identity’.
