Event Details : 'For Pina…' by Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts, Bangalore. Featuring Jayachandran Palazhy
'For Pina…' a site-specific promenade movement performance presented along with a film installation and live music is designed to commemorate an iconic dance artist of our times – Pina Bausch. Inspired by Pina's breathtaking work and life, this piece reflects contemporary India and its dancers who wish to offer their homage to this great choreographer.
This piece is set to animate the architectural features of performance venues across numerous Indian metros in January 2010. “For Pina…” will be situated in a specially designed sonic environment with cutting edge music. The piece offers fresh vantage points and unusual frames to experience Attakkalari's unique movement vocabulary, which draws influences from Indian physical and performance traditions as well as pedestrian movements.

Jayachandran Palazhy, Artistic Director, Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts
Jayachandran Palazhy is an internationally sought after dancer and choreographer and the Artistic Director of Attakkalari Centre for Movement Arts, Bangalore. He has trained in India in the dance forms of Bharatanatyam, Kathakali, Indian folk dance and Kalarippayattu (martial art), and in the UK, in Contemporary dance at the London Contemporary Dance School. He has also studied Ballet, Tai Chi, Capoeira and African Dance and has toured widely in India as well as internationally. He works extensively as a consultant in different parts of the world and is at the forefront of the contemporary South Asian movement arts scene. In addition, he has participated in artistic residencies internationally, presented papers and lecture demonstrations on subjects related to movement arts, and been the recipient of several awards. . He is also Director of the Attakkalari India Biennial (International Festival of Dance and Digital Arts).

Pina Bausch (27 July 1940 – 30 June 2009) was a German modern dance choreographer and a leading influence in the development of the Tanztheater style of dance. Philippine “Pina” Bausch was born in Solingen, near Düsseldorf. Bausch began dancing from a young age. In 1955 she entered the Folkwangschule in Essen, then directed by Germany’s most influential choreographer Kurt Jooss, one of the founders of German Expressionist dance.In 1962, Bausch joined Jooss’ new Folkwang Ballett Company as a soloist and assisted Jooss on many of the pieces, before choreographing her first piece in 1968, and in 1969 succeeded Jooss as artistic director. In 1972, Bausch started as artistic director of the then Wuppertal Opera Ballet, which was later renamed as the Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch. Male-female interaction is a theme found throughout her work, which has been an inspiration for and reached a wider audience. She had been on tour to India three times between 1979 and 2008.
