Artist's Comment : I have drawn inspiration from the ancient Indian poet, Jaydev’s classic work—Geet Govindam. Though many art forms have depicted his verses in illustrations, sketches and paintings, this is the first time that Jaydev’s immortal verses have been depicted in Warli art form.
Lord Krishna is the most popular and celebrated god of Hindu mythology. Radha, a goddess herself, is his beloved. Geet Govindam depicts the Love story of Krishna and Radha, which has been a topic of Indian artwork over a long period of time. While depicting the humane and divine sides of this love story, artists from different schools take recourse to various art forms. But there have been very few attempts to depict this immortal love story in tribal art forms of India without compromising the characteristics of those art forms.
An honest attempt has been made by me to express this love story in Warli Art, a traditional art form of Maharashtra. In most of the paintings, Lord Krishna has been depicted in blue colour; Radha in red colour and wherever other gopies or activity appears they have been shown in a different colour. All the paintings are based on the immortal verses of renowned poet, Jaydev’s Geet Govindom. The most significant feature of these paintings is that the whole body of work has been executed on canvas with acrylic colour.
Through this painting exhibition, I wish to fulfil three purposes: First—to present my work for critical viewing; Second—to give artistic expression to immortal verses of Jaydev, and finally—to bring a very vibrant art form of India before a worldwide viewership of art lovers.
