Penn Masala, the world's first and premier Hindi a cappella group, was formed in 1996 by a group of students from the University of Pennsylvania. After breakthrough performances at Bhangra Blowout in 1998 and, SASA in 1999, the group took the nation by storm.  They went on to perform for sold-out crowds in cities such as New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Houston, and Philadelphia.  More recently, Penn Masala was honored by performing at the White House for President Obama in observance of Diwali.
Over the last decade, Penn Masala has spread the popularity of Hindi a cappella music throughout the world.  They have performed in cities such as Toronto, London, and Mumbai where they performed alongside Sunidhi Chauhan at the Star Screen Awards. In 2003, the group performed at the Zee Bollywood Awards in New York and was honored by receiving the Project IMPACT Award for Outstanding Contribution to the South Asian-American Community.  Penn Masala has toured India twice previously, starting in 2006, where they performed for thousands at a sold out show at the NCPA in Mumbai. The group has been featured on numerous TV and radio talk shows including the hit Zee TV Show, Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge.
Penn Masala’s music has both Eastern and Western influences and inspires the South-Asian American population to be creative in sharing their culture. In ten years, Penn Masala has released six studio albums, all of which have been well-received by fans of all ages. The group also released a compilation album named, Out of Stock, which featured their most popular songs, two of which were featured in the hit movie, American Desi. Their sixth studio album, On Detours, was released in March of 2009 and featured a mix of popular Hindi and English covers as well as several original songs.

About Cappella Music : A cappella (Italian for from the chapel/choir) music is vocal music or singing without instrumental accompaniment. A cappella was originally intended to differentiate between Renaissance polyphony and Baroque concertato style. In the 19th century a renewed interest in Renaissance polyphony coupled with an ignorance of the fact that vocal parts were often doubled by instrumentalists led to the term coming to mean unaccompanied vocal music.  In modern usage, a cappella often refers to an all-vocal performance of any style, including barbershop, doo wop, and modern pop/rock.
