Santa Maradona starts with us being introduced to Andrea at a job interview, a scene that makes up one of the running jokes in the film, since Andrea haplessly goes from interview to interview and is laughed out of each. The titles then go up, concentrating on the image of Maradona playing football, reference to football thereafter only being slight. After the titles we have Andrea and a conversation with his girlfriend Dolores that starts with the phrase "we need to talk", the result of which is that Andrea goes storming out and the film flashes back 3 weeks, through the course of which we hang out with Andrea, Bart and Lucia. Andrea is looking for work, a task that is not going well. His flat mate Bart is running a scam as literary critic, which brings in some money, but not enough to pay their rent. For the most part they hang around and talk, use the hard concrete floor of the flat for a handball court and moan about how there is nothing to do. Lucia increasingly hangs out with them, all the time falling out with her boyfriend and her parents. Things change for Andrea when he bumps into Dolores again. He is struck by her, but has no idea of how to find her again. Then starts a game of cat and mouse, which eventually sees them together, forming a relationship that deeply affects both of them in love and inseparable, at least until the next argument.
