MUSIC : Celebration of 15th Anniversary of Statue of Buddha at Buddha Jayanti Park - 2nd October 08

• Event Details : Vidya Rao will offer recital of sutras from Sanskrit Buddhist texts along with verses from the medieval Bhakti poets which reflect the thought and message of the Buddha, Mahatma Gandhi, and of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
• Refreshment will be served following the ceremony.

• Background : October 2, 2008 marks the fifteenth anniversary of the creation and installation of the Statue of Buddha at Buddha Jayanti Park, a gift from His Holiness the Dalai Lama to the people and the Government of India.
  
• Every year on Gandhi Jayanti and on this historic event, a Ceremony of Remembrance is held in front of the statue to reflect upon the message of Buddha, Mahatma Gandhi and His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
• As has been a practice, the ceremony will start with chanting of verses in Pali from the Buddhist sutras by monks. This year, it will comprise of a special musical offering by a renowned classical singer Vidya Rao and accompanying musicians.
• The spiritual traditions of India reflect an unbroken stream of deep philosophical ideas that find echoes in the different schools of thought. Thus the teachings of the Buddhist sutras find parallel expressions in the vernacular poetry of the saints of the medieval Bhakti tradition. In turn these verses were an inspiration to contemporary thinkers such as Mahatma Gandhi.
