- About Sudip Chatterjee : Sudip Chatterjee, born in 1962 in Howrah, West Bengal graduated with First Class in Fine Arts from Indian College of Art & Draftsmanship in Kolkata. He has been a Research Scholar in Painting at the studio of Lalit Kala Akademi and a Lecturer in Painting of Visual Art Department in the Academy of Fine Arts, Kolkata.
- He has had many Solo Shows at New Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Germany. He has also participated in many Group shows across the country and also in Asperg and Stuttgart, Germany. His collections are with the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, the Consulates of France and Italy and the Embassy of Mexico. His works are also in private and public collections in India, Germany, France, UK, Finland, Austria, Canada and the USA.
- Sudip Chatterjee crafts an interior drama in his works with teasing tones and textures. Patchy oil and acrylic surfaces along with embossing and sand grains build up a nervous rhythm in his invariably abstract or semi abstract essays. His treatment of Space is confident and there is intelligent distribution of color zones. In his works one can find suggestions and shapes of pregnant women and feminine forms which are sculpturesque in dimension and disintegrating into the background. These narratives invite the viewer to decode hidden messages in them.
- Sudip says, ‘I want to enjoy the compositional challenges offered by space, with greater possibilities of individual expression. There are confrontations between the personal and the extra personal world; I have tried over the years to realize personal time in the perspective of extra personal time. What is reality? I have searched always for a mental form which is close to the essence of my thought. This is the central theme of my work.
- In pictorial terms I believe form and content are inseparable. It is not spelt out in forms rendered in graphic detail; it is condensed into a dominant image with resonance to evoke the viewer’s involvement in my vision.’
- He further adds, “Life to me is like a railway track wherein the three main pillars or stations are birth, sex and death. In my work, I have tried to highlight these three phases of life.”
- His luminous works move the observer. It melts your heart and wants you to reach out to the subjects.
