• Born in 1949, have done Masters in English Literature from Delhi University and Diploma in Theatre ( specialization in Direction ) from NSD
• Worked in TV as Producer from 1972-1977.
• Worked as Associate Professor in Indian Theatre History from 1977-1985.
• Was Director of National School of Drama from 1988-1995, during which time started the Theatre in Education Company, the Documentation and Publication Programme, and the Regional Resource Centre of the School.
• From 1995 have been serving in the School as Professor in Indian Theatre History.
• Have acted in and directed several plays including one at UK, Dartington College of Arts in1982.
• Some important productions- Lehron Ke Rajhans with NSD Repertory 1992, Holi with Bhartendu Natya Akademi 1996, Subarnalata with Kshitij 1999, Tinka Tinka ,2001with NSD students, based on the Gujarat earthquake, Kaun Thagwa Nagariya Lutal Ho,2004,based on kashinath singh’s story, also with NSD students .
• Her production Aur Kitne Tukde(,2000) based on Urvashi Butalia’s The Other Side of Silence won tremendous appreciation and was invited for several National Festivals in different parts of the country, including the Sangeet natak Akademi’s Golden Jubileee Festival. The play has also been performed at the International Theatre Festival in Lahore,Pakistan.
• Attended conferences, conducted workshops and given lectures in several countries ie UK, USA, Japan, China, Germany, France, Poland, USSR, Philippines apart from those within India.
• Published articles for several specialized journals both in Hindi and English, and in abooks on Indian theatre; and currently associated with the publication of a Hindi theatre journal
• Been associated with Natarang Pratishthan,a Theatre Archives and Documentation Centre as its Managing Trustee.
• Documented performances and work process of several Indian theatre directors including three women directors.
• Was project director for an Asian seminar on methodology of documentation of work process of theatre directors.
• She was Project Director of Poorva- An Asian Women Director’s Theatre Festival and Conference in Delhi in 2002
• Contributed entries for the Companion to the Indian Theatre being published by OUP, India and contributed entries on Indian theatre to the Oxford Dictionary of Theatre and Performance, being published by OUP, UK.
• Member of the Editorial board of the theatre journal Studies In Theatre And Performance, published by the Exeter University, UK.
• Presented papers on Indian women Theatre Directors in WPI Conferences held in Philippines and Japan.
