EXHIBITION : Palette Art Gallery presents print & etching work by Renowned artist Anupam Sud at Lalit Kala Academy - 1st to 13th December, 2007

  • Event Info : Palette Art Gallery, one of Delhi’s premier art galleries, is proud to present a retrospective exhibition and the book launch of renowned print maker and etching artist Anupam Sud. The works on exhibit span four decades of the artist’s work. While the book, the first ever to be published by Palette Art Gallery, documents the artist’s life, work, influences and shifts in aesthetic sensibilities and art mediums in great descriptive detail. Her artworks live up to the reputation of the artist’s name and are as compelling and emotive as they ever were.

  • The Anupam Sud Retrospective : There are complex, multiple points of entry into Anupam’s narrative. Primarily, the category of the printmaker in modern India is a vexed one. A medium that has only partially realized its potential, it is increasingly challenged by digital reproduction, and the enthusiastic return to painting in the recent one decade. Within this narrow fissure of opportunity, Anupam Sud’s achievements as a printmaker stand out, with a pristine certitude.
  • Anupam has consistently chosen a strongly engendered imagery in her work, drawing on enigma and seduction in homo--social and heterosexual contact. In this period her chosen forms are mature, athletic nude figures who appear in a fragmented narrative of intense and multiple participations. The artist creates a charged series of partially explicit relationships, even as she appears indifferent to issues of identification.
  • Continually working from an experimental rather than an ideological or theoretical base, Anupam Sud’s body of work pushes for cultural enquiry. In using the nude that remains innocent of the sexual act, Anupam presents different aspects of the spectatorial gaze. The fact that her figures engage minimally, yet appear in such close proximity evokes a sexual anxiety particular to her work.
  • In Anupam’s world, the figures waiting, inured to their own vulnerability, appear suspended in zones of unspoken communication, whose nature we can only speculate upon. This is perhaps the stillness of the embryonic forms of her earliest work, now rendered to suggest a separation between her subjects in an active world. Above all, even if there is a promise of pleasure, the suggestion of pain is never far away.

  • About the Book : The first ever to be published by Palette Art Gallery, the book examines and documents the life and work of Anupam Sud, over a period of four decades, in great detail with contributions from established art authorities and critics such as Gayatri Sinha, Geeti Sen and Rubina Karode. The book also contains excerpts taken from a very enlightening and private conversation between the artist and her ex-pupils, and now established artists and art tutors themselves, Subba Ghosh and Shukla Sawant. Beautifully illustrated and extremely informative, it is an absolute must have for all those individuals out there who love and appreciate the work of Anupam Sud
  • Speaking on the occasion, Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna, Directors, Palette Art Gallery said, “ It is a moment of great pride for Palette Art Gallery and us, as individuals to be mounting an Anupam Sud Retrospective Show of this proportion, simultaneously with a book launch based on the artist’s life and work. It has been a true labor of love that we hope the people out there appreciate and come to see. There has been trepidation and pressure on both of us but seeing all the beautiful works hung together in the halls of Lalit Kala and the finished book, it all seems worth it.”
  • The show will be on view at Lalit Kala Academy from the 1st of December till the 13th of December 2007.
