Vijay Tendulkar - Playwrighter of Kanyadaan

  • Vijay Tendulkar is regarded as one of India's best-known playwrights, and has been celebrated as the 'Playwright of the Millennium'. His plays, which have been perceived by critics as being ahead of their times, are also timeless, because of his accurate and sensitive portrayal of the social issues of the time. Tendulkar has more than 50 publications to his credit, including the plays Silence! The Court is in Session (1978) and Kanyadaan (1996) translated from Marathi. He has also written short stories: Dwandwa (1961) and Phalapakharn (1970); as well as children's plays: Bale Miltat (1960) and Patlachya Poriche Lagin (1965); and a novel: Kadambari One.
  • Tendulkar has been widely translated and performed in many Indian languages. He has received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, the Kamaladevi Chattopadhyaya Award, the Maharashtra State Award (nine times), the Saraswati Samman, as well as the Filmfare Award for Best Screenplay (Aakrosh, 1980). He has been conferred the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India, and has received the prestigious Vishnudas Bhave Memorial Award, for successfully raising social issues through his plays.
