PAINTING EXHIBITION "Speed" by Pranab Basu - 8th to 15th May, 2007

• Event Info : An exhibition of paintings in oil, acrylic and mixed media by Pranab Basu from Delhi.
• The truer artist is only conscious of his technique; unconscious of his talent, and which is no more than inborn, the given preconceived ideals, religious aspirations, are irrelevant matters; he is a technician who has learned from the tradition which has been painfully built by an untold number of masters. From them he has found, and appropriated, a certain series of forms and models, and he develops them or modifies them according to an impulse which is, precisely, his talent, or his inspiration. This condition is not something external to works of art – not a programme. The only programme an artist of the honest kind knows is the one imposed on him by his demon, but this he does not discuss. Rather, he simply goes on to give voice to that same impulse.

• At 22, entered media as a journalist after a brief stint in teaching. Continued journalism, mostly in economic and financial journalism for thirty years. Wrote also on art and cinema. For two years, did TV journalism for a US channel. The last paper to serve was The Times of India. He received an international scholarship in 1977 and went to East Europe for about a year.
• A self-taught painter. Initially painting remained a hobby to relax. Subsequently, it became a parallel vocation. Eventually, left journalism to pursue painting full time, and making documentary on Dante and the Ganges. Currently working on another film on Leonardo da Vinci.
• The theme of the current exhibition: “As such there is no specific theme for me. But it is linked to speed. For me painting is an act like any other vocation. There emerges an interesting space when external factor acts on human feelings. In my case, the external factor is speed; on this space ideas come of their own creating an impulse to act. Images arise’.
