  • WORKSHOP
  • Starting Event : Historical and Comparative Perspectives on Civil Society - 9th to 11th March, 2006
  • Entry : By Invitation
  • More Info : For the last couple of years, academic history writing has been aiming at a truly global perspective, which would enable us to integrate the history of different countries and cultures into a common frame of reference. This attempt will have to stand against two opposite tendencies: the tendency to reserve pride of place for Europe, which would turn global history into a new colonial venture, but also the tendency to view India (or some other country) as so completely sui generis that a dialogic and comparative perspective would no longer make sense.
  • Indian civil society in the nineteenth century will obviously look different from German, English or American civil society at the same time. What is needed is a concept, which is flexible enough to encompass these differences without annihilating them and to establish a relationship between them, a concept which would permit us to overcome the emphasis on forms that have developed in Europe.
  • The workshop aims at teasing out the possibilities of this approach. What are the advantages and pitfalls of introducing such a comparative perspective? Can we arrive at a provisional reconfiguration of the notion of civil society which would open up the way to a dialogue between research in Europe, India and countries like Turkey? Does it make sense to look for a (redefined) civil society in late 18th and 19th century India? How do these finding link up with the large amount of work which has been done on present-day civil society?
