Staring from North Campus, Yusuf Sarai, Gurgaon and Noida, four groups of cyclists will gather at Central Park, CP where we shall conclude the entire event with a small cultural programme which would include street plays and music. We are expecting 300-500 riders on the day and a public gathering of more than 500 people excluding cyclists.
Importantly, the Cyclothon will be organised by ActionAid India Volunteers. The Volunteer Engagement Programme of ActionAid India, which was formed with the purpose of engaging society at large in the work of ActionAid India has thrived and volunteers from all across the country have been actively working in a range of issues. Also, since the larger society forms the primary supporter base of Beti Zindabad!, we have consciously decided to extend the ownership of the campaign to them and let them organize and manage.
About the Organization:
In 2012, ActionAid India launched the Beti Zindabad! campaign to fight for women and girls’ rights against patriarchy. For us, the Child Sex Ratio statistics was yet another ugly manifestation of patriarchy and we realized that this menacing system can only be thwarted by collective action – led by women and girls from across the country – supported by all others who stood by ideas of social justice and gender equality.
Beti Zindabad! is currently active in 67 districts spread over 22 states of India. We have been reaching out to panchayats, urban bodies, state agencies, women’s self-help groups, medical associations, paramedics, young parents and students to appeal for the cause of the girl child. We strive to enforce the strict implementation of the Pre-conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) (PCPNDT) Act, with the aim to break the legitimacy that the practice of sex-selection enjoys in the medical fraternity. We demand that central, state and local governments fulfil all their obligations, as provided by law and the honorable courts, towards girls and women. We also challenge the dominant mind-set by mobilizing women and men, girls and boys, who support us in our endeavors to make gender equality a lived reality.
