6.30pm: ADORNO’S NIGHT MUSIC - Lecture
With Wieland Hoban and Prof. Pi-hsien Chen
Wieland Hoban will read excerpts from the book “Night Music”   accompanied on the piano by Prof. Pi-hsien Chen.
“Night Music” is the first complete English translation of two collections of texts compiled by Theodor W. Adorno – “Moments Musicaux” and “Theory of New Music”. “In Moments Musicaux”, Adorno echoes Schubert’s eponymous cycle, with its emphasis on aphorism, and offers lyrical reflections on music of the past and his own time. “Theory of New Music”, presents Adorno’s thoughts and theories on the composition, reception, and analysis of the music being written around him. The insightful texts in “Night Music” show the breadth of Adorno’s musical understanding and reveal an overlooked side to this significant thinker.
Wieland Hoban is a British composer of mostly chamber works that have been performed in Europe. He has translated several of Adorno’s works and is a translator for the ongoing book series “New Music & Aesthetics in the 21st Century” since 2001. He lives in Germany.  Pi-hsien Chen is a professor for the piano at the Musikhochschule in Köln since 1983 and holds a similar position at the Hochschule in Freiburg since 2004. Pi-hsien Chen, began learning piano at an early age and gave her first public performance at the age of five. She has performed with famous orchestras and has worked with  the most renowned conductors. During her career spanning over 27 years, she has been a part of numerous music festivals.
“Night Music - Essays on Music 1926-196” by Theodor W. Adorno is translated by Wieland Hoban and published by Seagull Books as part of The German List series with support from Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan, India.
“Night Music” from Seagull’s The German List will be available for sale at the event.
In cooperation with Seagull Books.

6.30 pm: BUILDING THE LIBRARY OF THE FUTURE
Illustrated lecture by Dr. Klaus Ulrich Werner
Creating libraries is essentially about people, and the increasing diversity of their needs. The traditional library is undergoing a radical transformation from collection-dominated to user-centric and this inspires the design of the new library buildings and the entire planning process. In the debate on modern library buildings “flexibility” is the main focus. Dr. Klaus Ulrich Werner will outline the key qualities of good library space and will show some remarkable examples of new academic and public libraries to illustrate current developments and trends in architecture and design from a German perspective.
Dr. Klaus Ulrich Werner is currently the Director of the Philological Library of the Freie Universität Berlin and has a degree in Library and Information Science and a Ph.D. in German Literature. He has been a consultant for many major library projects, both for restructuring libraries as well as building new ones. Dr. Werner has various publications to his credit in the field of library building, equipment and library management. He is also a member of the commission for library and archive building guidelines of the German Institute for Standardization (DIN).
9th September : At the Library (Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan)
