The mother and daughter duo came to India in 1930 upon the invitation of Rabindranath Tagore. They visited the holyplaces in India and also developed a special bond with many Indian leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Jawahar Lal Nehru, Sarojini Naidu, Indira Gandhi and many others. The art of Brunners became an integral part of the Indian art scene after the death of Elizabeth Sass Brunner. Elizabeth Brunner embraced Indian citizenship.
