In Light of India : Olivier Germain-Thomas, André Velter, with William Dalrymple & Ashok Vajpeyi
Olivier Germain Thomas is, among other things (radio-producer, specialist of art and Buddhism) a travel-writer who has extensively traveled around India and written several books about it (Le Bénarès Tokyo (Editiosn du Rocher, 2007), En chemin vers le Bouddha (Albin Michel, 2001), Le voyage des Indes (Imprimerie Nationale, 2003), La Tentation des Indes (Albin mIchel, 1993…)). André Velter, a poet but also director of the Poésie series at Gallimard éditions in Paris, has also traveled in South Asia which has inspired a number of his poems.
William Dalrymple or Ashok Vajpeyi need no introduction to an Indian audience.
What does India mean to these writers, how does it inspire their writing, what influence has it had on them. How and what can one write about India.  Writing about India can be a difficult task considering the fascination it provokes, considering orientalist stereotypes, and the sensitivity of Indian readers to how their country is perceived.
As a counter view to this, how is the West perceived by the Indian writers, how to represent it?
These and other themes can be addressed in this discussion which will open Littératures: a French Festival of Letters organized in the framework of the Bonjour India festival of France.
