Event Details : "Lost" by Hans-Ulrich Treichel Reading & discussion.
'Lost' is a story of an ordinary German family fleeing from the advancing Russian army in 1945. Fearing for their safety, they place their first-born son, Arnold, into the arms of a refugee and lose them both in the crowd. The family makes it to safety and starts all over again, painstakingly building a new life in the postwar economic miracle. But losing Arnold continues to haunt them. Arnold isn’t dead. He didn’t starve, either,’ is what the little brother, the narrator of this story, is finally told by his parents when he is about eight years old. ‘I was only just beginning to understand that Arnold, my un-dead brother, had the leading role in the family, and had assigned me a supporting part.’ The search is on. Finding lost Arnold is his parents’ dream and the little brother’s nightmare. Lost has been translated into 21 languages and has been made into a film. It was translated into English by Carol Brown Janeway. Hans-Ulrich Treichel will read from his book 'Lost' followed by a conversation with Urvashi Butalia.
