The Yellow Brick Project

Concept Note and Vision

Dance has been an integral part of human culture since the beginning of civilization. Across cultures, we can identify social dances, which commemorate special occasions, or magical/religious dances or even interpretations of popular stories to preserve tradition. Eventually dance was separated from its ritual basis and has become an art of its own.
Today, dance is gaining increasing commendation as an art form, which not only develops skill, precision and discipline in dancers but also promotes cooperative working, social cohesion and local engagement. Its recreational and therapeutic value is acknowledged, while globally its economic potential is being slowly recognized with the emerging concept of ‘Arts Investment’.
The Yellow Brick Project has a dual philosophy: firstly, to promote various dance styles within Delhi and secondly, to provide young people with an opportunity to participate in the dance, music, production and management aspects of the project, developing their potential as artists and managers.
Certain mindsets and stereotypes view dance as worthwhile only if it is associated with complex abstract and serious themes. The Yellow Brick project aims to break this stereotype and the upcoming dance production is structured on a simple, humorous and entertaining storyline which audiences of all ages and varying levels of dance experience will easily understand and enjoy.
It further aims to narrate this story through an interesting interweave of different genres of music and different kinds of dance including Contemporary, Jazz, Hip-hop, Latin styles, Tap dance and even fusion with Classical Indian dance forms while simultaneously experimenting with audio-visuals and different stage setups. Thus, The Yellow Brick Project provides young people with an opportunity to explore and experiment creatively. It empowers young artists – it’s their story, their choreography, their dance and their expression.
In the city, dance performances tend to only gain validity when being performed by highly professional and established institutions or “known” names. Available opportunities have a limited outreach and fail to tap into the immense potential of youth in the city. There is little to no space where young dancers and choreographers can perform in public and staged dance productions for the sake of art or to experiment with art, separate from dance-school or competitive arenas. The Yellow Brick Project aims to create such a space.
Further such a project hones young people’s life skills like responsibility, management, and teamwork, respecting their peers and developing a professional work ethic.
