TALK "The Return of the National State in the Global Crisis" by Prof. Robert Douglas Jessop at Teen Murti House - 6th April 09

• Event Details : Nehru Memorial Museum & Library presents Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Foundation Day Lecture by Prof. Robert Douglas Jessop, Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Founding Director, Institute of Advanced Studies at Lancaster University, UK on The Return of the National State in the Global Crisis.

• About Prof. Robert Douglas Jessop : Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Founding Director of the Institute of Advanced Studies at Lancaster University, was born on 3rd March 1946 in Dartford, an industrial town near London. His father was a blacksmith and he acquired his interest in the labour process from helping at his father's forge. After a traditional conservative upbringing, he became politically conscious after May 1968, participating in the ant-Vietnam war movement and contributing to Free University' and 'Communist University' pedagogic initiatives. The struggles of this period also gave Professor Jessop his other lifelong interest in political power and the state.
• His lecture at the NMML draws on these interests and activities. Jessop will discuss the future of the 'national state' in the interwoven financial, economic, political, social, resource and environmental crises. For almost 30 years, the Washington and post ¬Washington Consensus argued for more market, less state. Continuing efforts were made to roll back national states in favour of markets, civil society, and good governance. Their limits have been cruelly exposed in revived demands - even from capital and its allies - for strong state action to resolve the crisis- Yet the neo-liberal onslaught has weakened the very slates whose decisive intervention capital now demands. Jessop rejects technocratic solutions to these multiple crises, emphasizing the need for pessimism of the intellect, optimism of the will' and above all, drawing on collective wisdom and grass-roots movements.
