• Present day world is full of dualities and contradictions.
• While the scientific industrial empire has opened new vistas for living and communicating there seems to emerge a lack of compassion, care, tolerance and love. One is told that all religions propagate love and sisterhood/brotherhood among humans. But we see all over the world murder and mayhem in the name of religion.
• We have no time and respect for others whether driving on the roads or accosting different communities, cultures, religions. We live in urban conglomerates, in Saharas’ of soul. T.S. Elliot reverberates in The Waste Land—
• Unreal City,
• Under the brown fog of a winter dawn,
• A crowd flowed over London Bridge, so many,
• I had not thought death had undone so many
• The problem of modern civilization is not because of lack of faith but because too much faith that we are right and others wrong!! We look for divinity in a very confined cocoon of ‘my, our’ while ‘your, their’ are beyond its pale.
• The West especially the ordinary people have come to identify with Buddha as icon of love, peace and compassion. In India you can find at any time some exhibition of Buddha painting/sculptures going on. It is the preoccupation of art lovers and the artists that has now resulted in increasing focus on rendering Buddha.
• Ajay Samir is different for he does not try to build images of Buddha in the traditional Sarnath or Gandhar format. He allows his Buddha to be flute wielding or dressed as a circus clown with Grecian flower headgear or still holding a triangle with inset image reminiscent of Hanuman holding the sumeru Parvat. Ajay looks for divinity in the human and seems to suggest God is human or humans transform into godliness
