EXHIBITION ( Photography ) "I Rode To A Heaven Called Ladakh" by Shamim Akhtar at Lokayata, Hauz Khas Village - 22nd to 28th August 08
- Time : 10:00 am - 8:00 pm
- Event Details : An exhibition of photographs of Ladakh by Shamim Akhtar.
- About the Exhibition : “Rode to Heaven”- a solo biker’s ride to Ladakh in 16 days. Shamim rode all the way to Ladakh on his mobike and a glimpse of all that he witnessed on the treacherous path he tried to capture through his lens. The photographer has made an attempt to weave the pictures in the form of a narrative. Thus the pictures are not mere picturesque landscapes but are self-explanatory in nature.
- There are several special features to be noticed in this exhibition. First, the photographer has tried his hand at Infra red photography, without resorting to any digital manipulation; second, his huge panoramic photographs are not just eye soothers but technical marvels and the most important part, since the entire trip to Ladakh from Delhi was done on a time-scale the photographs too have been displayed as in the order of time and date!
- About the Photographer : Shamim Akhtar was born on the 7th of April 1970 in a small town Chapra, in Bihar. His father was a government servant but he strangely developed a passion for photography in his early adolescence. As he says, he slept with the lens since the age of ten.
- A wanderer right from his childhood he set out biking solo all over the Himalayas starting from his late teens. In 2006, he was able to complete the solo ride to Ladakh for the first time. The photographs taken by him during the trip were displayed in a solo exhibition at convention foyer, the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, in June 2007. He has managed to pile a humble stock of appreciable photographs on various aspects of nature and society and have to my credit a couple of bylines in several magazines.
- He happens to be in civil service (DANICS) by profession, he has done a coffee table book on Lakshadweep called “The Floating Pearls In the Arabian Sea- Lakshadweep”. This book is a compilation of his pictures on Lakshadweep along with a complimenting text.
- Shamim again successfully completed his second solo biking expedition to Ladakh in June 2008 and intended to document his experience in the form of a travelogue.
- Place : Lokayata Mulk Raj Anand Centre, Hauz Khas Village, New Delhi-110016
