Event Info : The University of Delhi commemorates 1857 with Dastangoi.
A tradition of storytelling in Urdu that came from the Persian speaking world. Depicting war, romance, trickery and magic, the Dastangos used nothing but words and performance – recitation, mimicry, voice, gestures – to keep audiences spellbound. They performed at the steps of the Jama Masjid, at the palace, at cafes, forever expanding the story so that it became perhaps the longest fictional narrative anywhere in the world. In its present form the art fuses literature and performance, fantasy and humor, orality and print.
