- Tribute to Mizoguchi
- Contemporary Japanese Cinema
- This section brings the cinema of a particular country into focus. This year we focus on Japanese Cinema with a special tribute to the films of Kenji Mizoguchi. Kenji Mizoguchi made films from the 1920s to the 1950s. Hailed as a Master of Japanese Cinema, he contributed substantially to the silent era and made two films in colour before his death in 1956.
- We will also be showcasing a selection of Samurai films in conjunction with the largest ever exhibition of Samurai Armour and Helmets as well as Japanese Dolls from the Osian’s Archive.
- Finally, we present a cross-section of Contemporary Japanese cinema, with an eclectic selection of films by directors from different backgrounds, with divergent themes and aesthetics, but all creations from the Japan of today.
- Hymns To Freedom
- The year 2007 marks the 150th anniversary of India’s ‘First War of Independence’ from the British in 1857. To celebrate the spirit of resistance and the universal desire for freedom, this section will commemorate freedom struggles in Asian and Arab countries.
- Silhouettes
- The experiences of women in a largely patriarchal world give them an emotional and intellectual complexity that needs reflection. In this section we will touch upon these experiences through films where women are the central characters.
- Spotlight : Filmcraft
- While cinema is a collaborative art form, all contributing aspects of the craft are also highly specialised skills. We recognise them in this new section where this year, through our selection of films, we will focus on the role of Cinematography in the crafting of film.
- India 1955
- The Osian’s Archive has a large collection of cinema memorabilia such as song synopsis booklets, posters and lobby cards of Indian cinema. 1955 saw the production of a remarkable variety of films where Ray’s Pather Panchali rubbed shoulders with a Mr and Mrs 55 and a Carnival Queen featuring Fearless Nadia not to mention popular classics such as Devdas and Shri 420. Recognising this remarkably creative era in Indian cinema, we will be showcasing films from this year and exhibiting connected archival materials from the Osian’s Archive during the festival.
